WHO DOES SAIL SERVE?

SAIL’S goal is to: Assist teens in their transition to adulthood and independence by equipping them with survival skills necessary for successful independent living.
Residents of the program are female adolescents between the ages of 16 to 21, as well as teen mothers who are referred by the Department of Children and Families.

WHAT DO SAIL’S TEENS DO?

The SAIL Program offers a practice environment in which our youth receive practical instruction and assistance vital in their role as consumer and tenant, geared to improving performance in a host of settings: at home, in school, at work, in the community, or in relationships. They are responsible for budgeting, food preparation and purchasing, an educational plan, setting vocational goals and positive recreation.
There is formal group instruction focusing in on mastering skills for successful independent living. There is a strong emphasis on improving interpersonal and communication skills. The curriculum is fine tuned to ensure meeting individual needs. The program Coordinator works closely with the youth to establish a solid comfort level and maintain communication with the youth’s caseworker. The teen is tested to ascertain abilities, strengths and deficits. During the term, the teen is tested weekly to see what skills the teen has mastered. The SAIL program assists the tenant by furnishing all of the belongings necessary to set up an apartment.

THE PROGRAM AIMS TO

• Provide hands on life skill training
• Improve academic abilities
• Assist with furniture procurement
• Heighten self esteem & motivation
• Instill ethics and responsibility
• Provide career guidance
• Improve functional abilities

S.A.I.L. APARTMENTS

With four singles and two-two bedrooms apartments, tenants are expected to be independent while receiving the level of supervision necessary for success. Local schools such as Tunxis Community College and Briarwood, provide potential educational opportunities. Located on Rte. 6, our apartments are on a bus line and are convenient to employment opportunities, stores, offices and banks.
Individual plans are developed for each tenant. Tutors and mentors are provided if desired. Through SAIL, tenants learn to:

• Budget and save money
• Enhance communication and interpersonal skills
• Improve self esteem
• Identify problems and formulate solutions
• Set a life plan for now & the future
• Improve judgment and decision making capabilities
• Work to one’s full potential

Through SAIL, the youth refine living and social skills and make a realistic, supported transition to independence.
