Beacon House provides for eight girls. All attend public school with
supplementary tutoring provided by Beacon House in conjunction with the
local school system.
Residents earn privileges depending on age and behavior. Many girls participate
in school activities and clubs. Each resident is assigned a weekly chore
and receives a small allowance.
WHERE ARE PAST RESIDENTS NOW?
Former residents include legal assistants, nurses, waitresses, bank
tellers, retail sales people, bank branch managers, cooks, food managers,
child-care providers, auto mechanics, ambulance attendants, cashiers and
real estate agents. During the past twenty five years, hundreds of teens
have been served by Beacon House, and have entered virtually every career.
Many of our residents have attended college, including BriarWood, Albertus Magnus, Yale, UConn, Boston U., SCSU, and Teikyo Post. Not all former
residents have pursued this path, but most are doing well, and are happy,
productive citizens of our community.
Beacon House has been successful in impacting the lives of many young
women. However, it is not possible without the assistance of our many
volunteers and contributors. It is this collective effort between Beacon
House Staff, Board of Managers, volunteers and contributors which make
the saying “It takes a whole village to raise a child” certainly
true with the children and youth that Beacon House must provide for.
